W212-Bridge

A dedicated electronic unit translating CAN-Bus data between an older engine and the modern Mercedes W204 / W207 / W212 body. It enables swapping OM611/612/613/646/647/648 and M112/M113 engines into cars after 2008 — with a correct cluster, start from the original ignition and automatic-gearbox operation.

Description

Why an older engine won't talk to a newer Mercedes

Engine controllers — for example OM611, 612, 613, 646, 647, 648, M112 or M113 — generate data for the car's CAN-Bus network. That data is sent and received in a defined format, at a defined speed, with its own sequential number (ID) and a data string for each ID. Each string carries information such as engine RPM, coolant temperature, diagnostic data, torque and much more.

Around 2006 Mercedes changed the way data is sent over CAN-Bus. A kind of "tower of Babel" arose — data was mixed between device IDs, and the IDs themselves completely changed. What used to be sent on ID308 was moved to three other IDs, with different data. In addition, the single 500 kbps line was split into two separate 500 kbps lines — one for the drivetrain, the other for communication with the instrument cluster and EZS. As a result an older device can't work with the newer ones — no coding or standard procedure can reconcile it.

What the bridge does

To fit an older engine (e.g. OM648) into a newer car (here a 2012 W212), a device and software were needed to translate data between the modules: so that information shows correctly on the cluster, the car starts from the original ignition, the fuel pump engages and the automatic gearbox works properly. Technically this lets you link the FBS2 / FBS3 modules together.
